Distribution

Creation is not the whole game. Distribution is the difference between making something and making something matter.

Creation is not the whole game. Distribution is the difference between making something and making something matter.

A great product that no one sees is a hobby. A mediocre product that millions see is a business. The world is full of brilliant work that died in obscurity and adequate work that changed the world, and the variable between them was not quality. It was distribution. The best maker in the room is not the one who wins. The one who wins is the one who is seen.

Distribution is the bottleneck of every career and every company.

People love to work on the thing itself: the code, the essay, the product. They hate the unglamorous work of getting it in front of people. But the thing itself is only half the job. The other half is the channel. The people who win are not necessarily the best at making. They are the ones who took the distribution problem as seriously as the creation problem.

Attention is the currency, and distribution is how you earn it.

Every audience, platform, and channel is a way to convert your work into attention. The person who writes one essay and posts it nowhere has done half the work of the person who writes the same essay and posts it everywhere. The marginal cost of distribution is low. The marginal return is everything. Publish to the largest number of places where your people can find you.

The algorithm rewards the consistent.

Distribution does not reward genius. It rewards reliability. The account that posts every week will outperform the account that posts a masterpiece once a year, because the algorithm — and the audience — learn to expect the consistent one. The habit of showing up is not a substitute for quality. It is the compounding vehicle that makes quality pay.

Make something worth distributing, then make distribution part of the making.

The best distribution is not a separate act. It is embedded in the work itself: a product that is easy to share, an essay that is easy to quote, a result that makes people want to tell someone. But you cannot rely on word of mouth alone. The honest formula is to make something good, then to actively place it where the world can find it, then to do it again until the momentum becomes self-sustaining.

Your unfair advantage is your persistence in distribution.

Distribution is undignified, repetitive, and slow at first. That is exactly why most people quit and why persistence wins. The ones who keep showing up while everyone else is waiting to be discovered end up discovered by default, because the field thinned out around them. Distribution is the discipline of being seen long enough that being seen becomes automatic.

The goal is not to be seen. The goal is to be seen by the right people.

Distribution without a point is noise. The point is to find the people who need what you make and to reach them where they are. That requires knowing who they are, what they read, and where they gather. The distribution question is not "how do I get famous?" It is "how do I get this into the hands of the person who will use it?" Answer that, and everything else follows.
